Tip: Updating SafetyChain Credentials in the Power BI Connector
Overview
The Power BI Connector authentication accesses the same SafetyChain authentication methods as the SafetyChain application. Updating credentials within Power BI should work as expected when performed correctly. This article outlines the recommended steps and important precautions to help prevent account lockouts.
How to Update SafetyChain Credentials in Power BI
Follow these steps to reset or update your credentials for the SafetyChain Power BI Connector:
- In Power BI Desktop, go to:
File → Options and settings → Data source settings - Select the SafetyChain Connector
- Click Edit Permissions
- Click Delete Credentials
- Click Edit Credentials
- Enter your new credentials and save
Check Global Permissions (If Needed)
Power BI may register the SafetyChain Connector in both the current file and Global permissions. If issues persist after updating credentials:
- Review the Global section in Data source settings
- Apply the same credential updates there if required
Note: In testing, updating credentials using the steps above was sufficient, but Global settings may still apply in some cases.
⚠️ Important: Avoid Account Lockouts
If you refresh all queries immediately after resetting credentials and the credentials are incorrect, you may inadvertently lock yourself out.
- The SafetyChain Power BI Connector connects directly to SafetyChain APIs
- These APIs use the same authentication mechanism as the SafetyChain application
- Multiple failed authentication attempts can trigger an account lockout after 10 attempts
Best Practice
- After updating credentials, test with only one query first
- Do not use Refresh All until you confirm authentication is working correctly
Verify Account Access
As a final check, log into the SafetyChain application using the same credentials to confirm the account is not locked before performing additional refreshes in Power BI.
Summary
- Credential updates in Power BI should work without issue when done correctly
- Be mindful of Global permission settings
- Always test with a single query before refreshing all data
- Verify application login to ensure the account remains accessible
This approach helps prevent unnecessary lockouts and simplifies troubleshooting.
